What Size TV Brackets Do You Need for a 65 Inch TV?

11 Oct 2026·8 min read

For a 65 inch TV, you need TV brackets that list 65 inches inside their screen size range, carry a weight rating above your TV's weight and fit the VESA hole pattern on its back. Get those three right and the bracket is the correct size. This guide shows you how to find each number for your own screen.

Quick answer: Check three numbers on your 65 inch TV: the VESA pattern in millimetres, the weight without its stand, and the screen size. Then choose TV brackets whose box covers all three, with weight to spare. A bracket made for a smaller screen can sometimes work, but only if the pattern and weight rating both match.

The three numbers that size TV brackets

People often ask for "a 65 inch bracket" at the shop counter. It's a question our DStv installers in Fish Hoek hear all the time. The inch figure helps, but it's the least important of the three. Here's what each number means and why it matters.

Screen size range

Every box lists a range of screen sizes. That range is mostly about balance and looks, so the TV doesn't overhang a tiny plate or dwarf a huge one. A 65 inch screen should sit inside the range, not at the edge of it.

The VESA hole pattern

VESA is the standard spacing of the four threaded holes on the back of a flat-screen TV. It's written as width by height in millimetres, like 400 x 300. The bracket's arms must stretch to match that exact VESA pattern, or the TV simply won't bolt on.

Weight rating

This is the one that keeps the TV on the wall. Use the weight of the screen without its stand, which is listed in the manual or on the maker's website. Pick a bracket rated clearly above it, not one that only just scrapes by.

How to find your TV's numbers in five minutes

  1. Find the model number on the sticker at the back of the TV or in the settings menu.
  2. Look up the manual or spec sheet for that model and note the VESA size and the weight without the stand.
  3. No manual? Measure the gap between the hole centres, side to side and top to bottom, in millimetres.
  4. Check whether the holes sit in a recess, because some TVs need spacers so the arms clear the back panel.
  5. Take a photo of the back of the TV and the sticker before you go shopping.

That photo saves a second trip into town. If you'd prefer us to check it all, our TV mounting service starts with confirming the numbers before any bracket is bought.

Retail labels vary. You'll see the same item called a TV wall mount, a TV mount holder or a bracket, so read the specs, not the name on the front of the box.

Will a 65 inch TV fit on a 55 inch wall mount?

Sometimes, yes. If the smaller bracket supports your VESA pattern and its weight limit is above your TV's weight, it can hold a 65 inch screen. The size on the box is a guide, not a hard limit.

The risk is a narrow wall plate under a wide, heavy screen. With an arm bracket, the bigger lever adds strain on the fixings. For a full motion arm we'd always choose one built for the larger size.

Height and viewing angle in Fish Hoek homes

A 65 inch screen is big in a typical Fish Hoek lounge, so height matters more than with a smaller set. Aim for the middle of the screen to sit near eye level when you're seated. Too high and you'll feel it in your neck after one rugby match.

Sea-facing flats along the hill and in Clovelly get strong light off False Bay in the afternoon. A slight downward tilt cuts that glare, and an arm lets you turn away from a bright window. For many retired couples, a tilt bracket at the right height is the most comfortable setup from an armchair.

Technician tip: Before drilling, tape a sheet of newspaper the size of the screen to the wall and sit down. Live with it for an evening. It's the easiest way to judge height and size without making a single hole.

Plan where the decoder goes at the same time. If you're weighing up Explora vs Explora Ultra for the new screen, the Ultra's 4K picture suits a 65 inch TV well.

Walls in Fish Hoek flats and older homes

The wall decides which fixings we use, and Fish Hoek has a real mix. Older family homes in Sun Valley and Capri usually have plastered brick, which holds a 65 inch screen well with the right plugs. Newer renovations often add board walls, which need studs or a solid backing.

Sectional title blocks bring their own rules. Many body corporates limit drilling into shared or outside walls and control where cables run. Our guide to DStv for flats and body corporates covers what to ask the trustees first.

If your block runs a shared dish, the TV point in your lounge may come from the building's communal DStv system. Moving the TV to a new wall may mean a new outlet, which the managing agent should approve.

Mistakes we see with big-screen TV brackets

  • Using the TV's weight with the stand still on, or guessing it.
  • Buying an arm bracket for a 65 inch screen and fixing it into board alone.
  • Hanging the screen too high, then living with a sore neck.
  • Leaving no slack in the cables, so tilting the TV pulls the HDMI loose.
  • Fitting an outdoor TV on a stoep with standard steel bolts that rust in the salt air.

Salt and the south-easter are tough on anything metal near the coast. Our article on salt air corrosion explains why stainless fixings last longer outside.

Safety first: A 65 inch TV is awkward and heavy, so always lift it onto a bracket with two people. Check for hidden pipes and wiring before you drill, and keep extension leads away from wet areas. If the wall or the weight worries you, call a technician.

Once it's up, the cables still need to go to the right ports. Our steps for connecting decoder cables help if you're setting it up yourself.

TV brackets: FAQs

What size wall bracket do I need for a 65 inch TV?

You need a bracket whose screen range includes 65 inches, whose arms match your TV's VESA pattern and whose weight limit is above the TV's weight without the stand. The inch size alone isn't enough, so check all three on the box before you pay.

Will a 65 inch TV fit on a 55 inch wall mount?

It can, if that mount supports your VESA pattern and is rated for more than your TV weighs. A fixed or tilt plate is the safer case. For a swinging arm, we'd choose one built for the bigger screen because the extra width adds leverage on the wall.

What size screws do I need for TV brackets on a 65 inch TV?

Use the TV bolts supplied with the bracket that thread into your TV's holes by hand without forcing. Bolts that are too long can damage the inside of the screen, so add spacers rather than longer screws. Wall fixings are a separate choice based on brick, concrete or board.

How high should TV brackets be for a 65 inch screen?

Set the middle of the screen near your eye level when seated, which for most couches is lower than people expect. If the TV must go higher, choose a tilt bracket so the picture angles down. Mark the spot on the wall and sit with it before drilling.

Can you mount a 65 inch TV in a Fish Hoek flat?

Usually, yes, but check your body corporate rules on drilling and cabling first. Most concrete and brick walls in Fish Hoek blocks hold a big screen well with the right fixings. We confirm the wall and the bracket before we start.
